The Bar Association Kathua (BAK) has withdrawn its offer to contest without charge the case of the eight people accused in the rape and murder case of an eight-year-old Muslim girl in the district.
"The country's political leadership, the judiciary, the media and the civil society's unflinching resolve for ensuring justice in this heinous crime would go a long way in restoring people's confidence in the institutions and reinforcing the sense of justice in J&K", she said.More news: IL hospital goes blue for Child Abuse Prevention Month
Both the alliance partners - the BJP and the PDP - had separate legislature party meetings in Srinagar and Jammu on Saturday to discuss the situation arising out of the polarisation in the state over the rape-cum-murder of the girl. With these resignations, the number of ministers in the state government has come down to 22, including nine from the BJP.More news: Two-goal hero Zaha 'buzzing' after Crystal Palace's victory
Immediately after the meeting, Madhav told reporters that the resignations of the two ministers would be handed over to Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti for further action. However, sources say that the two BJP ministers resigned after Prime Minister Narendra Modi refused to accept their reason for being a part of the rally. "It was sheer indiscretion on their part", he said.
After the meeting, Works Minister and senior PDP leader Naeem Ahkar, who is also the government spokesperson, "appreciated" the BJP support in the handling of the case which had caused fissures in the alliance. "It has strengthened my belief that Jammu serves as a model of inclusiveness and together the people of J-K inspire secular unity and righteousness", she said and added that this serves as a cue that the people of Jammu and Kashmir can hold a beacon of hope for the whole country amid harshly polarized discourse. "I want to thank people of Jammu for standing united against the gory crime", she said.More news: Neymar reveals when he will be back from injury
"We appreciate our alliance partner who helped us in this case...they made the two ministers resign in the case". The resigned ministers, Chaudhry Lal Singh and Chander Parkash Ganga had reportedly attended rallies in the support of the accused in the Kathua case. Her body was found dumped in a forest near Rasana village seven days later.
