President Donald Trump signed a bill Monday night ending the government shutdown, capping off a almost three-day deadlock and reinstating funds until February 8, a senior administration official said.
The US House of Representatives also passed the legislation to reopen the government.
Democrats and Republicans voted 80-18 to reopen the government, ending a furlough for thousands of federal employees. That's where the measure hit a snafu late Friday night, triggering the stalemate.
A group of Senate Republicans met with Trump at the White House shortly after the Senate advanced the spending bill, including No. 2 GOP leader John Cornyn and immigration hardliners Tom Cotton of Arkansas and David Perdue of Georgia. In exchange, McConnell agreed to address Democratic demands that Congress quickly restore protections against deportation to young undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S.as children, which advocates call "dreamers". Legislation on DACA will go to the floor by that point if lawmakers can't reach a deal on the immigration program, Senate leaders said.
"I think it was the key to breaking the logjam", said Sen.
However, some Democrats - including many eyeing 2020 presidential bids - slammed the deal and voted against it.
In October, a Politico poll found that fully 46 percent of Americans believe the media actually "makes up" stories against Mr. Trump, a number that includes some 76 percent of Republicans polled.
He said the deal is far from flawless, however. "The Republican leaders told me to work out a deal with the White House".More news: Four Killed In German Helicopter, Plane Collision
"Enough is enough. We can not rely on empty promises from those who have already proven to play politics with the lives of Dreamers", Praeli said in a statement Monday night. "Each would have avoided this shutdown".
"Once the government is funded, my administration will work toward solving the problem of very unfair illegal immigration", the statement read.
"I am pleased that Democrats in Congress have come to their senses", Trump said in a statement.
Democratic lawmakers had initially vowed to oppose any Bill to fund the government without an agreement to restore the DACA protections. They understand the desires of the Democratic base. McConnell's promise is just that - a promise. 'We'll build him a wall. Chris Coons, D-Del., told NPR's Morning Edition, "because of the famously vulgar way that President Trump sort of blew up the last time thatSens. [Lindsey] Graham and [Dick] Durbin offered him a bipartisan deal [on immigration]".
Democrats were trying to frame the deal as a temporary victory, though.
Republican House speaker Paul Ryan said if the Senate passed the spending bill, the House would pass it. Most of the endangered Democrats who are up for re-election in 2018 in states that Trump won all voted to advance the measure, except for Montana Sen.
McConnell reiterated the same on the Senate floor, adding the shutdown was distracting senators from focusing on passing legislation. DACA renewal is a necessary step that polls well with the public, but not at the cost of a shuttered government, and the Republican line of attack forced the minority party to back off their filibuster. Trump blamed the Democratic leader for what the White House dubbed "the Schumer Shutdown" while Schumer blamed the president for "the Trump Shutdown".
Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., who has argued for tougher immigration standards, also echoed that sentiment.More news: Zaira Wasim's Secret Superstar breaks a Dangal record; Wins three Filmfare awards
President Trump on Monday accused Democrats of prioritizing services and security for noncitizens over USA citizens.
Critical government functions were put on hold during the shutdown, even though the Trump administration sought to minimize the effects compared to the last government freeze, which lasted 16 days in 2013. He canceled a planned trip to Florida where he hoped to celebrate the first anniversary of his inauguration with a high-dollar fundraising party.
Sanders pushed back on allegations from Schumer and other Democrats that Trump was absent from negotiations over the weekend and never reached out to their side.
"I will be living under a lot of stress, a lot of uncertainty and fear that everything that I worked so hard to accomplish can be gone", Corzo said by telephone.
Representatives from those talks briefed leaders Sunday afternoon, but the suspense dragged out for almost six hours before McConnell made his announcement.
Several of the senators in the bipartisan group said they anxious a prolonged shutdown could become harder to fix and would cause greater damage to the country.
But the loss obscured what others saw as a longer term gain for Democrats.
Which means: As soon as we get out of this shutdown, Congress is at risk for another. Many of us have expressed major concern about continuing to operate under a continuing resolution.More news: IntelliPharmaCeutics International Inc. (IPCI) Analysts See $-0.10 EPS
